OWWA - MEDICARE Program Benefits

Membership

Membership to the Medical Care Program of OWWA is required before an Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW's) employment documents can be processed and prior to the issuance of the Overseas Employment Certificate. Membership to the program insures the Overseas Filipino Workers and his dependents of Medical assistance and FREE out patient services. This also entitles the beneficiaries participation in our activities such as the OFW Family Health Day. Moreover, unlike other Medicare program that requires a three (3) month wait period, members of the OWWA's Medicare Program enjoys an out-right availment of his/her benefits once he/she paid the nine-hundred peso (Php 900.00) premium and received the Medicare Eligibility Certificate.

Medical Assistance Benefits

All OFW Medicare members and their dependents except those with existing coverage through SSS/GSIS voluntary membership program are entitled to compensable confinement in a PHIC-accredited hospital not exceeding forty-five (45) days in a given year. The legal dependents are provided with another set of forty-five (45) days to be shared among themselves within a year.

The Medicare program will pay part of the expenses for room and board, medicines, X-rays, and laboratory examinations, professional fees (surgical, medical/dental, anesthesiologist's fees), operating room fees and surgical family planning procedures.

     A beneficiary shall be entitled to benefits if he meets the following conditions:

• confined in a hospital due to illness or injury requiring hospitalization or undergoes a surgical procedure in the operating room complex or on an out-patient basis or receives chemotheraphy, radiotheraphy, or hemodialysis similarly on an out patient basis;

• annual Medicare contribution has been paid;

• the confinement date is within the period of effectivity of coverage as appearing in the member's Medicare Eligibility Certificate (MEC);

• the 45-day room and board allowance for the calendar year has not been exhausted.

The beneficiary only needs to present the original or a certified true copy of the Medicare Eligibility Certificate (MEC) to the hospital, the latter to be authenticated by the hospital and attached  to the claim form. Before discharge, the hospital deducts the Medicare benefit from the total hospital bill before payment.

FREE Out-Patient Services

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their dependents may enjoy our free out-patient services.  This is conducted every fridays at the OWWA Center and at the various Regional OWWA Units nationwide.  This service is also available at the Filipino Workers Resource and Development Centers (FWRDC) in countries like Tokyo, Osaka, Dubai, Abu-Dhabi, Rome, Jeddah, and Bahrain.  The service includes free consultation, free routine & lab examination, and free health education & counseling.
